This F**k It Push Mantra: What’s the point of cake if you don’t eat it? Transform this absurd idiom into something empowering. We WILL eat cake (not the grubby stuff that Marie Antoinette was probably referring to: no, proper cakey cake).

My first job was with my dream advertising agency, BBH – which had been the most creative agency of the previous 10 years. But I wasn’t happy there. I wondered if I’d made a huge mistake in choosing that line of work. But I moved to another agency, HHCL (which was later voted the most creative agency of the 10 years that followed), with a very different culture, and was as happy as Larry for many years.

When I started to feel a little less happy than lucky old Larry, and wanted to start experimenting with therapeutic work as a job, the agency was open enough to allow me to do so within the context of the business. I went from being a creative to using relaxation and trance techniques to help others come up with ideas.

Even if you can’t get to Do What You Love within the context of your job, how can you get to Do What You Love alongside your job? By creating more time, you can start doing what you love at the same time as you do your job. Maybe once you’re spending a good amount of time doing what you love (as well as what you don’t), you’ll be happier with the balance in your life. Maybe you’ll be grateful for what your job gives you (a sense of satisfaction, status, money, etc.) and it will sit quite happily alongside whatever it is you’re doing in your spare time.

And maybe if you do eventually want to make a living from doing what you love, you could simply start slowly. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Do the yoga teacher training in your summer holidays, and then start to run a local class one evening a week. Then maybe go part-time at work, and teach yoga on your day off. Let doing what you love grow organically. Really start to play with how it could work for you.
